Best Three Ways to Recognize International Women’s Day (March 8)

International Women’s Day is on Saturday March 8.

untitled

For those of you that  don’t know about the day, it is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.

This makes it  one extremely powerful day!  A day in which women should be celebrated.  This year’s theme is INSPIRING CHANGE.

“The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts      of all who care about human rights” Gloria Steinem

That is why I believed that this day deserved some attention (which I always find lacking in the news).    Women are the cornerstone of society and contribute so much to everyone’s daily lives.  For me, it will be a day of reflection and a day to learn and appreciate the challenges and struggles that other women are experiencing in the world.

So I wanted to share some of the best three ways to Recognize International Women’s Day on March 8:

1.  Let everyone you know (or don’t know) that March 8th is International Women’s Day

2.  Find a woman who had inspired change in this world and learn more about her.

3.  Celebrate the day – in a way which is special and honors all of the women in the world

If you are like me, you are hooked Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, etc. and I encourage you to use those mediums to shout it (metaphorically) to the world that it’s International Women’s Day on March 8.

For my second best of three – I wanted to focus on a woman or women that truly inspiring or inspired change.  Find one and research them,  Find out all about them.  Make them a project that you want to work on.

For my last best, I think that this is a day that needs to be celebrated.  If you are a woman – make it a special day when you do something for yourself and others.  If you have children, let them know about the day and make it a celebration of women – find a way to celebrate it – make it a tradition in your family.  If you are a man, you can celebrate it too.

Dedicated to all of the women in the world.

Best Three Things I’m Looking Foward Too!

tipstagram_self8It has been awhile since I’ve blogged.  Life has a way of getting messing with my plans but I’m back and I wanted my first post of 2014 to be about the things that I’m looking forward too in 2014 (and beyond).

2013 was a year of ups and downs. Good things happened (like a trip to Las Vegas and the acceptance of a new job) but also some bad things happen (usually involving house problems) but I’ve persevered – because that is sometimes the only way…to pull up those metaphorical pants and get on with things.

So for the start of 2014, I sat myself down and did a big self-evaluation.  A self-evaluation that looked at all of the aspects of my life and how I can continue or approve upon them…it was also a little soul searching because as the year was winding down – I realized that I had lost touch with it .  No, nothing bad just that I hadn’t been paying it much attention.  Feeding the soul is something that I think gets overlooked in our lives and mine need some TLC.   That is why I did the self-evaluation – I needed to have things to look forward to and to strive for.

So here is my best three:

1.  Volunteering

2. Taking ME time

3.  Starting something new

Volunteering.  Something that I always say I want to do but end up making up so many excuses why I can’t.  Not this year.  This year, I’m looking at volunteering opportunities in my community and going to sign myself up.  I think this is something that not enough people do (and should be).  So many organizations need help.  So the question I asked myself, WHY NOT?  What is actually preventing me from NOT volunteering?  I honestly couldn’t come up with anything so now its on the top of my list to look forward too this year.

Taking capital M-E time.  This is something that I also seem to forgot to do or make excuses not to do.  This doesn’t mean I need to book spa time…no this just means that I need to focus on things that make me happy – that separate me from my the world.  For me, this means a solitary walk, listening to music, reading, playing a video game, doing crafts…it doesn’t cost money…its just for me.   I don’t do this enough and this is something I’m changing and looking forward too.

Starting something new.  If you’re like me, I usually start something but never finish it.  Or I have so many great ideas, I start but again never pursue.  That is changing this year.  This year I’m going to start a novel.  I’m going to start some new craft projects (from start to end).  I’m going to learn computer programming.  I’m not letting anything stand in my way.  No excuses.

Best Three Life Tips

There are some things that as a child that your parents don’t tell you (and I can’t blame them) because it seems to be something that you have to experience for yourself.  I’m talking about getting up everyday and going to work.  Having to earn a living.  Having to interact with people that are very different compared to you and how to handle the situations that work throws out to you.  These are the things that you cannot learn from someone but really need to live them and experience them for yourself.

That is why I love to decorate my work space with uplifting life tips (I print mine off from http://www.tipstagram.com/).  When we look at studies on work place stress, the numbers (unfortunately are rising) and that is not good.  Our mental health is as important as our physical health.  Workplaces invest so much money in ensuring they are building a healthy workplace but they forget the mental health piece.   My life tips are around me because when I have a bad day, its easy to sit back in my chair, swirl around and look at those tips.  For some reason, seeing them writen just helps me put things into perspective.  I also even send them to my family, friends and co-workers when I know they are having a bad day.

1.  It’s OK to make mistakes.

2.  Value the lessons your mistakes teach you.

3. Think positively.

It really is ok to make mistakes.  We’re human.  However when you are at work, you don’t always find that same mentally is shared and that is why I have it around me to remind me.  I will make mistakes and that is ok.

For my second choice, its around those mistakes – learn from them.  That will help you and others around you.  People hate making the same mistake twice and I can completely agree.  We can’t undervalue mistakes.  You make one, now learn from it, move on and do want needs to be done.

The last life tip is a hard one for me.  Think Positively.  This is something that I struggle with constantly.  I try and try and then try again.  It always seems easier to think negatively than positively but I need to make that change because that change will trickle down and hopefully it will make me a better person.

Best Three Things I Couldn’t Live Without

For this post I wanted to focus on the things that have come into my life that I can’t imagine living without.  This does not include people such as my family and friends – that is without saying – there is no way I could live without them or emotions such as love, sadness and happiness.  Those emotions are the cornerstone of life and living without them wouldn’t be right.  No, for this post, I’m talking about actual things. The things that I have included in this post have become an instrumental part of my life and picturing me living in a world without them is really, really difficult.  I understand that this might make me sound prividledged and crass (and I can definitely understand if people have those sentiments – to be honest, I did too) but I did feel that these things needed to be emphasized in their own post on my blog.

1.  Cell Phone

2. My king-size bed

3. Books

I think the first thing on my list would apply to a lot of people out there.  I remember a time without cell phones (that would be hard for some of the younger readers) but yes, a time without cell phones – it just sounds crazy.  Anyway, companies like Apple, Blackberry, Samsung, Motorolla, LG, Sony, and all other cell phone companies have truly made a ‘killing’ off consumers and have created phones that are so integral to our way of life that it is hard to imagine life without them.  That’s how it is with my phone.  Everything is on it and I can do anything I need to with it and that’s why it sits at number one on this best three list.

English: Mobile phone evolution Русский: Эволю...

The second thing I can’t live without is my king-size bed.  This one might be funny to some but it’s true.  I was a student, I’ve slept on futtons, old mattresses etc. but as soon as I purchased my home, I bought a king-size bed and all I can say is that it’s amazing.  There is so much room.  There is nothing bad I can say.

books

For my last thing, it was an easy choice.  It had to be books.  I’m that old-fashioned person that still prefers to hold a book in my hands and read.  If I got an e-reader for a gift – sure I wouldn’t refuse it but I would still purchase books.  I love books.  I love to have them all around the house.  They are magical to me (something that I inherited from my father who loved books just as much as me) and I couldn’t imagine not being able to buy them anymore.  I know that one day, that is how it’s going to be but for now I’m going to enjoy holding them in my hands.

Best Three Things to do on a Weekend

The weekend.   Aahhh the weekend…The time I look forward to, dread having to give up and dream about throughout the week.  It represents two glorious days in which there is no structure, no routine, no deadlines, no demands, no awkward conversations, no office politics and no dressing up.  The time is mine and I can set my schedule how I want.  I can do what I want and that is how I like it.

I thought about this topic for the post as my weekend was winding down (and I was dreading the start of the work week).  There is just something magical when a person is stripped (methaphorically) of the professional demeanor that we have to have during the week and can just relax and enjoy the weekend.    I think we become different people.  I know that some of my own co-workers wouldn’t recognize me if they saw me on the weekend.

1.  Sleep In

2.  Focus on something that makes you happy

3. Go for a walk – somewhere, anywhere

There is nothing greater than being able to sleep in on a weekend.  I know that as we get older, it seems to be harder.  Our bodies are use to getting up at a certain time (damn that alarm clock!) and that is just awful.  Really, really awful.  So, if you are one of the lucky ones to be able to sleep in…it is just an amazing experience.  I have to say, getting to sleep in and waking up after that sleep, is just divine.

The second thing should be focused on something that makes you happy.  The weekend is your time.  I know for me, I love to read.  Just absolutely love it and that is what I love to do on weekend.  I grab whatever book I am ready, settle down and just read.  Whatever it is you like to do – just do it!  If it’s going to make you happy, why wouldn’t you spend your weekend time on doing it.

As for the last pick, going for a walk is something I encourage.  First it gets you out of the house, second it can take you to great places and third, it keeps you healthy.  I love walking.  Especially on the weekends when I can discover new places such as a park, walking on a beach, window shopping down a busy avenue…the possibilities are endless.

Best Three Things that Quiet the Crazy World Around Me

There are some days when the pressures of life (work, finances, relationship troubles) come barreling down at me and all I can think about are the things that I would be doing that would help to quiet the crazy world around me.  These are things that can take my mind off whatever is troubling me and transport me into a mindless state of peace and tranquility.  Where bills, work deadlines, health issues and all the others things that are driving me insane are swept from my mind.  The following are the thing that helo quiet the crazy world around me.

1.  Sitting in front of a fire (whether from a fireplace or camp fire) and staring at the embers of the fire

2. Walking along a deserted beach and listening to the waves crash down

3. Looking at the stars

Looking into a campfire has a way of truly mezmorizing me.  Its amazing that all that I was feeling previously can be shut out and all I see is the burning embers.   Its crazy but true.  My mind simply turns off.  I can think of anything else except the beauty of the fire and the calming soothing effect is has on me.  It makes it very hard to look away, especially when its time to leave and go to sleep.  For me, this is the best way to quiet the crazy world around me.

For me, walking on a deserted beach and hearing the waves crash down along the shore is amazing.  Sometimes they are deafening and that is an amazing thing.  It allows my mind to block everything else and I focus on my walking, my breathing and the breathtaking sound of the waves crashing.  For those that have never been able to experience the ocean and all of its might, I encourage you to travel to one (one day in your life) and you will understand what I am talking about.

As for my last pick,  it’s definitely looking up at the stars. Pleiades Star Cluster

I was lucky enough this summer to have an incredible experience with this.  I was camping in a camp ground that had constructed an outside observation area for star gazing.  It was a cold night but my partner and I made our way there around 10pm at night.  We huddled together, stopped talking and simply looked up…we were there for over 2 hours.  Not a word was said, we simply just looked up at the sky and all the brilliant stars shining in the night sky.  It was an amazing experience and worked to clear my mind of all its stress and complications
