If you are like me, you like to discover new things. In this case, it’s TV shows that may not be in the mainstream but are great (and overlooked because not many people know about them). There are so many of these types of shows. It’s kind of frustrated because this usually means that the TV shows I really like don’t end up staying on that long. They are usually canceled because they don’t have the type of viewership that make network executives happy.
Hence the reason for this post. I thought it would be nice to highlight the ‘underdogs’ of TV and let them shine in the spotlight for once. There are lots of these shows that could be mentioned – so for this post I will probably add some honorable mentions at the end of the post.
Now on to the big reveal – here are my best three:
1. Grand Hotel (or Gran Hotel – the Spanish title)
2. Legend of the Seeker
3. The Musketeers (BBC version)
I came across Grand Hotel on Netflix. I was at home sick and had watched a lot of the TV shows so I wanted something new. I read the synopsis and decided to give it a try…and like that I was hooked. For me, it was a Spanish-type version of Downton Abbey but with more intrigue, romance, and fiery latin tempers! (and kind-of like a soap opera – which I missed). I’m telling you – I became obsessed and binged watched all of the episodes that same day. Julio and Alicia – oh my god! The two main characters from different ‘sides of the track’ let’s say and their story and the story of everyone involved with the Grand Hotel. Its based at a hotel with owners, employees and guests contributing to the story. I should note – its in Spanish – a language I can’t speak but there is subtitles – which helped. There is a total of 3 seasons – only 2 are on Netflix right now – waiting for the last season to be added – hopefully that will be soon.
My second choice was easy. Legend of the Seeker would have gotten the top spot before I had seen Grand Hotel. It still remains one of my favorites. It was only on 2 seasons but I just loved it (thanks to my sister for introducing it to me!). For me, I loved this how (and still do) because of the main characters – Richard and Kahlan. You need to watch this show…I’ve included the season 1 trailer but Season 2 is equally as good!
The third choice was The Musketeers (another one my sister suggested!). Its a great show, full of action, mystery, romance and really good looking men! It was another one that I binged watched and loved it. So far it has one season but was renewed for a second one…and I can’t wait what adventures The Musketeers will be involved with.
My So-Called Life (still a classic and one that was gone too soon); Misfits; Undeclared; and Wonderfalls
Admit it. You have one (or two or three in my case). We all do. That is ok and one of the reasons why I wanted to share mine.
Wikipedia defines a guilty pleasure as:
A guilty pleasure is something one enjoys and considers pleasurable despite feeling guilt for enjoying it. The “guilt” involved is sometimes simply fear of others discovering one’s lowbrow or otherwise embarrassing tastes, such as campy styles of entertainment. Fashion, video games, music, films, and junk food can be examples of guilty pleasures.
So in the risk of embarrassing myself or not (because I know so people will have the same guilty pleasures as me), here are the best three that I have:
1. Anything on the CW (I love Reign and The Vampire Diaries) and MTV (Teen Wolf)
2. Romance Novels (not just ‘Chick Lit’)
3. Flavored Popcorn

The first thing on my list might not seem like a guilty pleasure to some people – especially tweens, teenagers and people in their early to mid-20s – but for a woman in her early to mid-30s – the CW and MTV don’t seem like the best place to spend my tv time, however I just can’t help myself. I love the shows. They are addictive and they have characters that I just love – and they make me keep coming back for more. Take for instant The Vampire Diaries. I love the show. I watch it, I rewatch it, over and over. I’m a fan of Caroline – not Elena and not Damon (sorry Delena fans) and Klaus – so when he left, you can imagine how sad I was. I’m just hoping for some crossovers – please don’t ruin the ‘budding’ love story….This is just one show – now I’m into Reign. Yes, I like history but there is barely any historical fact in this show – except for the names and the timeperiod, otherwise I shouldn’t like it but Ohhh, I love Mary and Francis (and the chemistry). Teen Wolf is the same as above…I love teh characters and everything about the show…my TV show guilty pleasures. It makes me smile.
Romance novels. Yes I read them…a lot. Not just ‘chick lit’ ones with contemporary heroines and heros but also the historical romance novels where we always have a writer pair a virgin with Duke or an experience man. The stories are nuts and some of thee most unrealistic plots around. I know in my head that is ridiculous but I just enjoy reading them anyways. I’m obsessive about these books – thank good for iBooks and e-readers – there is so much more available now and easily accessible to satisfy my guilty pleasure.
My last guilty pleasure is flavored popcorn. Its quite embarrassing. I stuff my face with this stuff. I love it. It’s one of my favorite foods. I especially like the cheesy flavors – white cheddar, or cheesy jalapaneo. My mouth is just watering writing this. If you haven’t tried it before – please do, you don’t know what you’re missing.

I’ve always lived with someone. I have never had the chance to actually have a place all to myself. So when I get the house to myself, its actually a really great time for me. I love it. I love being alone. I love the solitude. I love being quiet. I like that fact that there is no one around me. That isn’t to say I always want to be alone, its just that when I get these moments, I cherish them.
For me, there are aways a couple of things that makes this time great and that is the reason for tonight’s post. These are just three of the best but there could have easily been more.
1. No Schedules
2. Going Nude (that’s right walking around naked)
3. Singing and Dancing (like there is no one around – because there isn’t!)
No schedules. This is simply a dream come true when you are by yourself. You don’t need to have dinner at a certain time, there is not set time that you need to get up, no set time to do anything. That is why this is at the top of my list. I love being able to let go of the structure of life for those precious days by myself and just adopt a freer, less contrictive lifestyle.
I know that it might be cliché about going nude but really that is a time to be one with your birthday suit. Its not to say you can’t walk around nude with your partner or whoever else you feel comfortable with but it just seems better when you are alone. To walk around and not try to hide all the flaws you think you have (which you might do with someone else). Just getting naked. Its liberating.
My last item on the list was singing and dancing. This is one that I truly get behind. I’m lucky because I don’t have close neighbors, so I can blast my music and I do. Its so loud and I just sing to the songs on my playlist and dance around my house. Its fun, great exercise and a grea way to cut out the stress. One of the best songs for this is Part of Me by Katy Perry. Another good song for this is Sugar, Sugar by The Archies and of course anything by Lady Gaga.
For this post I wanted to focus on the things that have come into my life that I can’t imagine living without. This does not include people such as my family and friends – that is without saying – there is no way I could live without them or emotions such as love, sadness and happiness. Those emotions are the cornerstone of life and living without them wouldn’t be right. No, for this post, I’m talking about actual things. The things that I have included in this post have become an instrumental part of my life and picturing me living in a world without them is really, really difficult. I understand that this might make me sound prividledged and crass (and I can definitely understand if people have those sentiments – to be honest, I did too) but I did feel that these things needed to be emphasized in their own post on my blog.
1. Cell Phone
2. My king-size bed
I think the first thing on my list would apply to a lot of people out there. I remember a time without cell phones (that would be hard for some of the younger readers) but yes, a time without cell phones – it just sounds crazy. Anyway, companies like Apple, Blackberry, Samsung, Motorolla, LG, Sony, and all other cell phone companies have truly made a ‘killing’ off consumers and have created phones that are so integral to our way of life that it is hard to imagine life without them. That’s how it is with my phone. Everything is on it and I can do anything I need to with it and that’s why it sits at number one on this best three list.
The second thing I can’t live without is my king-size bed. This one might be funny to some but it’s true. I was a student, I’ve slept on futtons, old mattresses etc. but as soon as I purchased my home, I bought a king-size bed and all I can say is that it’s amazing. There is so much room. There is nothing bad I can say.
books (Photo credit: brody4)
For my last thing, it was an easy choice. It had to be books. I’m that old-fashioned person that still prefers to hold a book in my hands and read. If I got an e-reader for a gift – sure I wouldn’t refuse it but I would still purchase books. I love books. I love to have them all around the house. They are magical to me (something that I inherited from my father who loved books just as much as me) and I couldn’t imagine not being able to buy them anymore. I know that one day, that is how it’s going to be but for now I’m going to enjoy holding them in my hands.
