Best Three Museums in the World

For this post,  I wanted to focus on a place that I love to be, where I can spend hours of my time, where I never get bored and where some of the most people things ever created are housed.  Of course (as you can see from my post title) is a museum.  To me, a museum is an amazing place…and I envy all those that work in one.  To me, that would be a dream job (I know, I know that sounds “nerdy” but I don’t care! I just love museums).

So, here are the Best 3 Museums in the world:

1. The State Hermitatge Museum in St. Petersburg

2. The British Museum in London

3.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York

Here are my honorable mentions: The Egyptian Museum (this was hard to leave out of the top 3) in Cairo; The Prado Museum in Madrid; The Louvre in Paris; Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna; Vatican Museums in Vatican City; National Archaeological Museum in Athens; and The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

To me, The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia needs to be number 1.  It truly is the best museum and one of the oldest in the world.  It was originally founded by Catherine the Great in 1764 and opened to the public in 1852.  The collection of the State Hermitage includes more than three million works of art and artefacts from around the world including paintings, graphic works, sculptures and works of applied art, archaeological finds and numerous other items.  It is estimated that the musuem has over 3 million items and only a small fraction of that are on display.  The museum occupies 6 buildings inlcuding the Winter Palace, the former palace of the Tsars of Russia.  It is simply breathtaking.  I encourage you to visit (and if you cannot make it there, visit the musuem’s website and it will take you on a virtual tour and will allow you to search the collections).

For my second pick of best 3 museums, it had to be the British Musuem in London.  This is a spectacular museum that has one amazing collection.  You can get lost in this place and you wouldn’t even mind.

For best pick #3, that was a hard one but The Metropolitant Museum of Art (The Met) had to be on the list.  Like the museums above, it has a collection that is simply amazing and it (like the others) is a place where you can lose yourself (in a good way).
